Dr Saji K John and his wife Cynthia started Asha-Jyothi Foundation in 2007, to cater for the needs of women and children in the Hyderabad area of India.

Saji started working for Operation Mobilization (OM) India, a registered NGO, in 1983. Saji was based in various locations in India while working for OM, as well as on its ship, Doulos, which had 340 volunteers from 40 countries: during his time on board, he visited 15 different countries.
